Progress on Shepherd High School Exterior and Interior Delayed

Construction on Shepherd High School advances with exterior near completion and interior work ongoing but occupancy is months away. Officials say shower rooms and several classrooms will not be ready for opening, leaving no firm completion date.

Winn Elementary School Nearing Opening With Furnishings Soon

Rough grading for Winn Elementary School is nearly complete and furniture is expected any day to outfit classrooms for the September 6 opening. Seeding and landscaping of grounds remain to be finished.

Otis M. Smith to Visit Isabella and Midland Counties

Auditor General Otis M. Smith will visit Isabella and Midland Counties on Thursday August 18. He will attend a noon luncheon in Mt. Pleasant hosted by Isabella County Democrats and tour the Isabella County Fair in the afternoon. Mary Lou Colburn organizes the Isabella visit. In Midland he attends a Democratic Committee dinner and stays overnight at the Midland County Fair.

Vacation Time Ends as Shepherd Schools Open

Shepherd Public Schools prepare to begin on Tuesday September 6 with 14 buses in service and several route changes due to road work on highway 27. First day schedule ends at 11 30 am. Enrollment expected to rise from 1199 to about 1250. Books issued August 29 30 with four dollar rental fees for all grades 7 12. New registrations set for August 29 30 in Mr Bates and Mrs Laidley offices. Faculty grows by four and will assemble September 2 after a kickoff breakfast.

United Fund Board Adopts 60 61 Budget

Isa bella County United Fund Board approved a 1960 61 campaign budget of 48600 up 2359 from last year. The budget committee was led by E Allan Morrow with C C Richtmeyer Bruce Webber Orville Klumpp and Frank Cauchon. Lawrence Scott is expected to name the 1960 campaign chairman soon. Dorothy Philo now manages the UF office in the Red Cross building in Mt Pleasant.

No Isabella Drivers In Penalty Box

During the past week the driving licenses of 646 Michigan drivers were suspended and those of 147 were revoked. The suspension is a temporary withdrawal of driving privilege for up to one year, while revoked licenses are terminated and not automatically reinstated after the period of revocation.

Special Election Planned for Bond to Drill New Water Well

Shepherd Village Council set October 3 for a special election to authorize a 26,000 revenue bond to acquire property and drill a new water well. The plan aims to relieve an aging well, improve fire safety, and fund mains expansion with water and sewer revenues. The council also signed an agreement with the State Health Department to study sewerage disposal, targeting completion by spring 1963 and allowing future state approval for sewer work.

Appointed Trustee to Veterans Trust Fund in Isabella County

On August 12 1960 the Board of Trustees of the Michigan Veteran Trust Fund named Karl E Nestle of 3825 Millbrook Mt Pleasant Michigan as Veterans of Foreign Wars Representative on the Isabella County Veterans Trust Fund Committee to succeed Harold L Thomas who resigned. Term ends June 30 1963.

To Fly To Texas For Showing Of New J D Tractor

The Shepherd Hardware and Implement Company will take part in a vast dealer meeting in Dallas Texas late this month. About 4 500 John Deere dealers and 1 500 other personnel will be airlifted by sixteen airlines to the event within 24 hours to view the latest tractors and service plans.

Doctor Goblirsch and Family Move into Alvin Wood Residence

Dr. Dean E Goblirsch aged 26 and his wife Leila Kissel and their three children have moved into the Alvin Wood residence and begun settling in their new home Monday evening. He will join Dr. Howard Dearing at the Shepherd Clinic. Born in Little Falls Minnesota he is a Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery graduate and interned at Carson City Hospital. The Gobl Ischs bring a long family medical tradition and are welcomed to the village for a long stay.
