Shepherd's Maple Syrup reports record production headed for 600 gallons with weather favorable. Festival set for April 18 with pancake sales catching up to production. Queen pageant draws 10 entrants with five local judges slated for April 8 at the Shepherd State Bank Community Room. Public urged to volunteer by leaving names with Mrs. Irene Doepker.
The Town and Country Recreation Association board met March 24 to plan the summer program and discuss liability for baseball and girl softball. They approved insurance for all participants and will inform parents by letter. Neil Green named Association Representative on the three member baseball commission. A special baseball managers meeting is planned with the president and Green. park director Al Du Bois urged more park equipment. Playground committee members named Mary Ruth Dearing Marilyn Swagger and Ina Mae Philo for the year.
Isabella County Driver Safety School starts April 7 at 7 30 P M in Mt Pleasant Senior High School room 501. Associate Professor William Jakab coordinates the classes with sessions on April 14 21 and 28. Open to residents lacking high school driver education.
Shepherd High School Band members excelled at the Solo and Ensemble contest in Lansing, earning one first and three seconds. The Brass Quartet of David Kelley Jim Root Donn Gates and Jim Struble took top rating, with several duets and a trio also placing. Leader Claude Lemmer receives noted credit for the band’s improved performance in Class B against larger groups.
The Coe Township Library board approved a new showcase to display objects of interest. The Shepherd Woman's Club agreed to assist the library committee in gathering hobbies antiques old books and other material for public display.
Three Shepherd FFA Chapter members joined 900 Michigan FFA youths at the 36th Annual Michigan Association Convention at Michigan State University East Lansing. Don Moeggenberg and Paul Vergote Jr. received State Farmer Degrees, with Vergote named Star State Farmer.
The Gratiot County National Farm Organization announces a large whole beef roast at the St. Louis Cafeteria on Saturday April 4. Preparations include 550 lbs beef 600 lbs potatoes 100 lbs beans 4 bu cabbage 100 loaves bread and 200 pies prepared by the cafeteria staff.
The Shepherd Board of Education hires Daverman Associates to study current facilities and future enrollment for a progressive program. Planning consultants Richard Wiggins and Claus Peukema will report by April 9 with a public meeting to follow, aiming for a June 8 vote on a tentative program. The district serves parts of nine townships, with about 1400 students and growing enrollment, needing more classrooms and operating millage. Officials emphasize prudent planning and public involvement ahead of potential school improvements and a new high school debt retirement millage. The Argus will publish meeting dates and progress, with cooperation from the board, superintendent Warmbrunn, and the architectural firm.
