Family loses home in 7:46am Vasquez Fire
A 68 year old Shafter woman and two grandchildren escaped a house fire on Vasquez Avenue after 7:46 am. Kern County Fire Department battled 50 percent engulfment with 23 personnel. Damage estimated at 350000. Red Cross assisted. The blaze started when a child played with matches.

SPD seeks suspect in central valley hit and run
The Shafter Police Department requests public help to identify a suspect or the vehicle involved in a hit and run on September 16 at about 8 p.m. at Central Valley Highway and Central Avenue. A white two door car struck a pedestrian, ran a red light, and fled. Contact Officer Grider or Sanchez at 746-6341 referencing case 06-2535.

Lerdo escapee caught in Bakersfield
In July an inmate escaped Lerdo Minimum Security Facility. Kern County Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Wood said Saul Ramirez may live at 221 Hayes Street Bakersfield. Suppression Unit and Metro Patrol deputies checked the address and learned Ramirez used an assumed name but was not present. Further leads were developed.

Health Net provides 24 7 interpreter support in 12 languages with a telephonic option covering 150 languages to help families understand health care plans and forms. Sky Circus lands in Shafter at Saint Therese’s Church
Sky Circus makes its first appearance in Shafter at Saint Therese’s Catholic Church. The troupe performs Sept 21 to 25 featuring acrobats animals jugglers and clowns. General manager Fernando Campa says many performers have ties to Circus Circus in Las Vegas.

Shafter approves MOUs with Police and Public Works unions
The Shafter City Council on Sept 19 approved memorandums of understanding with the Shafter Police Officers Association and the Shafter Public Works Unit. Both contracts span two years with a 4.5 percent cost of living increase, a 2 percent COLA effective Jan 11, 2007, and an enhanced opt-out health insurance benefit. The meeting also honored Jerry Ezell for 12 years on the Planning Commission and discussed annexation and pre zoning of 154.24 acres west of Poplar Ave. Ongoing projects include tentative tract 6614 subdividing 140 acres with 431 homes, a five-acre park, and public-safety grants totaling $200,000 for police equipment including three new cars.
