Fivecoat, the new Shafter police chief, arrived eight weeks ago and quickly embraced the town’s small city atmosphere. A Taft Union High School graduate, he aims to maintain local service levels while guiding growth, addressing gang and domestic violence, and improving drug and property-crime methods. He previously taught political science at Bakersfield College after a career with the Kern County Sheriff’s Department.

Remembrance ceremony precedes Measure I talk in Shafter
On Sept 11 at Christian Fellowship Church in Smith's Corner a remembrance ceremony honored victims of the 9 11 attacks. The event opened with a color guard and a national anthem sung by Richland Junior High School Choir and featured a World Trade Center and Pentagon slideshow. Afterward Kern Taxpayers for Safety and Traffic Relief’s Dan Ingram discussed Measure I, a proposed 0.5 percent sales tax lasting 20 years to fund local road repairs in Kern County, with about 900 million projected and protections to keep funds local. An Independent Citizens Oversight Committee will oversee annual reporting.
