Dave Dundas, Shafter Press reporter, earned second prize for his two act play And So, Tomorrow in the California Tales radio program sponsored by Ford Motor Company. He will receive $50. first prize is $150. Dundas served four years in the Navy during World War II and has written short stories, this being his first play.
The Shafter Ministerial Association shifted its regular meeting from Monday night November 3 to Monday morning at 10 30 to allow ministers to attend the Wings Over Jordan Choir concert at the Mennonite Brethren Church at 7:30 Monday evening. The meeting will be at Reverend C F Ummel's home.
Bakersfield Kiwanis president Don Shannon and Taft Kiwanis president Dr. Harry Harps bring their wives to Shafter to judge the Halloween parade at 7 p m. Judges come from nearby cities for an impartial view. Entries assemble by 6 30 p m on James Street and California Avenue for a parade starting at 7 p m with cash prizes across grades and vehicle and costume categories.
Shafter announces full details of its 1947 Community Chest drive next Tuesday in the Press. Directors meet and elect Dr. O. G. Ohlsson secretary succeeding H. W. Pat Kelly who resigns after three years. Cards for the drive are being prepared and workers contacted.
Mr and Mrs Herbert Midgley spent the week in Shafter visiting old friends. They returned yesterday to their Glendale home.
Shafter joins Kern County in raising 360 dollars of a 4500 county goal to buy a carload of wheat for the Friendship Train. Mrs J W Frizzell and Mrs E B Stringham attended the Bakersfield meeting. funds may be left at Bank of America in Shafter. Deadline is November 6.
Kern County Under-Sheriff Jack Houston told Shafter Rotary Club that the only way to cope with communism is to expose it. He urged citizens to report subversive activities to the FBI, calling communists a greater threat than Hitler and describing them as underground and fanatical. Paul Newell introduced him. Al Ingraham presided.
Shafter Kiwanis heard delegates report on the district convention. Jack Hill Hanley Witcher and Ted Kinman spoke of the conclave and new District Governor Felix Dowd. The group set plans for tonight’s Kiwanis Halloween parade and celebrated three member birthdays.
After six months of remodeling the Home Appliance and Furniture Company reveals a greatly enlarged store with floor space more than doubled. Owner Wm. announces open house Monday to Friday next week and invites Shafter residents to attend, with a prize drawing Saturday at 7 15 p m. Tickets will be given to visitors throughout the week.
The Business and Professional Women's Club hosts a rummage sale at Sam Lachenmaier's real estate office Saturday morning starting at 9 30. Proceeds support club activities and community service.
A baby boy was born to Mr and Mrs Stella Hamilton on October 29 weighing 8 pounds 7 ounces.
At the Shafter City Council meeting, engineers reported drafting preliminary plans to enlarge the sewerage system. Surveying and pre installation work are underway while material purchases and actual excavation wait on Utility bonds printing in Los Angeles. Plans to widen Shafter Avenue from 60 to 80 feet hinge on a district petition for sidewalks curbs and gutters expected to be signed and submitted, enabling work in January.
The Hallowe en parade ends around 9 pm at the American Legion Building where Paul Garrett and his orchestra will play five tunes for teens. Prizes await the most unusual girl and outstanding boy costumes. auxiliary decorations set the masquerade mood. Admission is 50 cents per person.
Shafter residents can join Kern county in sending a carload of wheat on the Friendship Train. The effort symbolizes American generosity and aims to lift European spirits and local selfishness alike. Every student should contribute at least three cents, and individuals may give what they can to help fund future trains and build world friendship.
