Funeral services were held for Ernest Tolbert 48 of Riverside Avenue in Shafter with Rev. Sam Wilcoxon officiating. Interment followed in Shafter cemetery. Tolbert a concrete finisher died at home last Sunday morning of possible moon. Survived by widow Binonia Tolbert son Arval Tolbert four daughters and four brothers and his parents of Shafter and Los Angeles.

Mr and Mrs Walter Nelson are enroute from a visit in Oklahoma City to Roswell New Mexico according to word received in Shafter this week. The note places the Nelsons traveling status as they return home. Local readers are asked to relay any updates on their arrival.
John J. Peters, prominent Shafter rancher, was named by the Board of Directors to replace Gus Klassen who resigned after moving from the district. He serves with Emil Kirschennann and irrigation engineer Harry Riddell on the three man committee that produced the Feasibility Report detailing water needs and recommendations. The report urges contracting water with the Bureau of Reclamation and forming a Kern County Water Agency to speed development in water-deficient areas.
Harry A. Mitchell, president of the California State Chamber of Commerce, warns Proposition No. 13 threatens democratic checks and balances by creating a metropolitan majority. He argues it would pack the senate and assembly, marginalize rural counties, and destroy the voice of 54 counties in California’s legislature.
H W Pat Kelly of Shafter served as master of ceremonies at the Bakersfield Inn for the second annual Kern County Society for Crippled Children meeting. Kent Roberts spoke on the day’s news, with Mrs Kelly and her husband attending.
Shafter Generals host Orosi High School tonight in a key league showdown at 8 p.m. after a 13 to 0 win over Exeter. Orosi won their last game 7 to 6 against Dinuba, with Chuck Wallace and Carl McCormick leading a stout offense and a six to seven man defensive line.
Shafter's Colonels seek to remain undefeated under Coaches Schacht Heber as they host Orosi in the first meeting between the schools. Key backs include Tom Kelly Jerry Johns Edwards Beech Barker Rice and Fletcher with a strong line led by Hughes Van Cleave and Royal. The game marks a bid to stay atop a three way league tie amid tonight's sixteenth season game.
Shafter and Wasco Rotary clubs hosted 80 outstanding athletes at Motel Canelo for a Monday night banquet. Each school sent 40 youths with Dutch Derr as speaker, discussing Growing up through ambition and stick-to-it-iveness among humorous sports anecdotes. Derr, ex Giants player and Kings County Chamber secretary, spoke with his son Romer present. Guests included Shafter High and Wasco coaches and Rotary club presidents, with plans for an annual youth service banquet.
The Shafter Kiwanis Club holds its annual Hallowe en parade along James Street Lerdo Central Avenue to the county park. Prizes range from 2 to 20 dollars across divisions for Kindergarten to eighth grade and all floats win in non competitive group features. Contact Chairman Frizzell at 601 or 451 to join.
Mike Vono announces the grand opening of the Shafter Watch Shop at 527 Central Avenue, sharing space with Chuck Clements Shafter Radio and Appliance Shop. He offers repair service and a full line of watches and rings, is a Los Angeles School of Watchmaking graduate, WWII veteran, and resides in Was to with his month old daughter Linda Irene.
Clarence Neuman Sam Barling and Ray Dallam left Shafter Thursday morning by airplane for Klamath Falls Oregon where they will enjoy a few days shoot.
Two Shafter residents announce the impending opening of the A B C Baby Shoppe at 217 Central Avenue with co owners Mrs Frank Russell and Mrs Jake Bergen. Bergen will be full time manager and the shop will carry toys clothing and items for children from infants to teens with Holgate toys featured. Grand date set for 1 November.
Shriners attending the Al Malaikah temple ceremony in Las Vegas Nevada on Saturday October 30 include Phil Ohanneso Hobson among the guests.
