The Kern River dam at Isabella likely won’t finish for three to four years yet. It aims to secure drought relief by conserving wet-year supplies and reducing evaporation at Buena Vista Lake. The Kern River water would be diverted to Bakersfield for Arvin Edison and land company needs, while the Land Company would receive an equivalent amount via the Friant Kern Canal. The Shafter Wasco district could be affected if water exchanges occur and Central Valley water is allocated to northern lands. The district will need supplemental Central Valley water to survive, but a single distribution system is urged to avoid separate plans for Shafter Wasco and North Kern districts. Steps should be taken soon if the Land Company uses Central Valley water on North Kern Lands.
