City and County Get Major Allocation From ABC Fund
Statewide liquor license fees for the first half of 1948 total 5,688,317.94 dollars, the largest allocation to date. Kern County will receive 47,386.28 dollars for its unincorporated area and Shafter will get 1,145 dollars as part of the distribution to cities and counties for local liquor regulation and enforcement.

Thomas N. Harvey Dies in Bakersfield
Thomas Norman Harvey, Kern County board of trustees, died at a Bakersfield hospital Friday night at 10 20 p m from a heart ailment after suffering a stroke last Wednesday. Harvey was a Bakersfield attorney and former superior court judge, served as school board president 18 years, and advocated a progressive school building program. He became board president January 21 1929 and declined re election after last July.

New Mortuary Opened Here by Rem Bristow
Rem Bristow, manager of the Janzen Mortuary in Shafter, opens the Shafter Funeral Home at 177 East Lerdo Road with his wife Jean Bristow as lady attendant and Lauress W. Fike as partner. The facility includes a Cadillac hearse and a Dodge ambulance operating 24 hours daily serving Shafter and vicinity. Both Bristow and Fike are WWII veterans and ex service men. Bristow is active in the American Legion and Kiwanis Club. The new funeral home will be open all week.

Legion Auxiliary Hold Hard Times Social at Legion Hall
The Legion and Auxiliary hosted a Friday night hard times party at the Legion Hall. Prizes for worst dressed went to Mrs Irma McCoy and Redon Baker with honorable mentions for Jane Hahn Paul Ingraham and Harvey Neuman Pellet. A large popcorn box served as refreshments and some fines were imposed for not smoking with toothpick cigarettes.

Livers Recovers After Stroke Share News From Shafter
Reverend William S. Harper reports in a Shafter Press letter that W. A. Livers suffered a light stroke about a month ago. The stroke was localized with limited effects and recovery is underway.
Shafter High Introduces Biweekly Swim Instruction
Shafter High School now offers biweekly swimming and diving lessons to all students at Richland Aquatic Center. Every Thursday and Friday, gym classes travel by bus to two large pools where teachers Miss Betty Lund and the program staff provide instruction. The effort aims to teach swimming science and muscular coordination while reducing drowning risks through basic water skills.

Fire Police Ball Set For November 19 at Woman's Club

Four-Year-Old Boy Dies at Stella Harris Camp
Delton Eugene Reese aged four son of Mr and Mrs Robert Reese of Shafter died at his home at Stella Harris Camp Friday. The remains were shipped by Flickinger-Janzen Mortuary to Comache Texas where services were held Sunday. He is survived by his parents and a brother Alfred Dale Reese of Shafter. Born in Texas he had resided three months in Shafter.

German Elder To Speak Here At Adventist Meeting
