The Second Annual Scout O Rama concluded with a Court of Honor led by the Order of the Arrow. Shafter youths received numerous honors across divisions including First and Second Class, Merit Badges, and specialty awards.
Twelve grade children of Lerdo with teacher Erwin Waite and principal Gerald Miller turned cotton pickers for a day at Reynold Mettler ranch. They picked 1132 pounds of cotton and earned 33.96 dollars toward the annual Catalina trip. The class also raises funds by selling magazines, popcorn, novelties, and greeting cards.
The Shafter planning commission reported to the city council that the Assembly of God in Shafter has complied with all commission requests regarding construction of new church quarters on Central Valley Lanes and annexation approval was considered.
Floyd Cooper submitted the sole bid for landscaping the Richland school district grounds around the new library. His proposal of 968 dollars was approved by the school board of trustees.
The campaign committee in Shafter announced the Community Chest drive with a larger budget to support the Boy Scouts of America Fire Girls Salvation Army Recreation Commission and other agencies. The Kingsburg Cotton Oil Company interests acquire the Carolina Farms Gins just off the Golden State Highway north of Lerdo. Davis names Sam Ragan to head Visalia operations and manage the gins. The venture is renamed Kingsburg Carolina Gin Company.
The Shafter high school Generals host Garces in a Lough Sequoia League varsity clash Friday at 8 p.m. at Shafter Stadium with a 6 p.m. pregame on the schedule. The Bucks meet Corcoran C at Corcoran. The Generals plan to start Alex Fene and Paul Moat Beverly as key players.
Shafter youth Tommy W. Davis stars in a Walt Disney Mickey Mouse Newsreel Special about Kern County Long White Potatoes. Part one airs Friday December 30 and part two on December 3. Channel 29 in Kern County shows it at 5:00 PM. Francis P. Pusateri coordinated the industry aspects for Disney.
The Leslie L. Rob inson post of the American Legion announced its purchase of Lee's Drive-In from Lee Riley who had owned it since 1948. Eugene P. Guenther Legion commander said the restaurant will be offered for lease once escrow completes with support from a local backer.
The 16th annual Shafter Kiwanis Halloween fest will attract about 2500 children and spectators Wednesday night. Mel Parrett says events start with a two day window painting contest for area school children with prizes for best displays. Clay Hale notes prizes. The fire department will hand out 1000 noise makers to children. Parade forms at Mannel Park at 6:30 p.m. and proceeds to the high school field by 7.

The Freshman class at Shafter High School won the PTA drive with 31 percent of parents joining. Dennis Foreman notes this largest class captured top honors and will receive $25 added to its treasury, while Juniors earned 29 percent and overall parent participation sits around 28 percent.
