Californians, who own about one fourth of the nation's 800000 residential pools, may account for about one fourth of an expected 500 home pool fatalities this year, mainly among children, unless safety precautions are followed.
Junior Forest Rangers will abound as the Smokey the Bear Summer Reading Club starts at Kern County Library branches. Children who read earn stars toward a Smokey Bear California Junior Forest Ranger pin, with reading pace left to each child. The Shafter Potato Festival continues 8 p.m. Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday with Central Avenue blocked to vehicles, foot traffic urged. Free ride tickets distributed at 30 participating stores, plus food concessions by local churches and school groups. Entertainment includes Studio Band, Richland School Orchestra, and a Buttonwillow Elementary band, all performing along James and Central. A prize drawing caps Saturday at 6 p.m. with entries via a coupon in the newspaper.

California Division of Highways invites bids for four San Joaquin Valley Kern projects. In Arvin area Bear Mountain Boulevard Route 223 will expand from two to four lanes within specified city limits. Total funds 326300 includes 11300 City of Arvin construction. Six raised pavement marker locations along Routes 33 119 166 178 184 and 223 will be bid. Open bids June 18 in Sacramento.
