Memorial Day Observed in Shafter With Patriotic Program
Memorial Day will be observed in Shafter on Friday in Memorial Park with a brief patriotic program. Leslie L. Robinson Post No. 213 of the American Legion, aided by its Auxiliary, arranges the tribute to more than 200 local war dead. Weather permitting, the event will honor veterans and reflect community appreciation for service members.

The festival offers free carnival rides for children and music by three school bands. Prizes donated by Shafter merchants will be awarded as a main drawing, with concession stands run by local organizations featured during the event on Thursday.

Seventy nine students from Shafter and nearby communities were honored at the 12th annual Scholastic Achievement Banquet held at Richland School. Citations were presented by Mayor J. C. City Moves to Acquire Animal Layout
Shafter plans to host a unique animal museum after council approval. John Lachenmaier offers 72 mounted animals from three continents and housing needs include a 40 by 40 foot building or 30 by 40 foot option with railings and guides. Potato Harvest Starts In Shafter Area
Potatoes began moving to market in Shafter as the 1969 spring harvest opened at the California Potato Growers plant on North Shafter Avenue. First runs came from Edison area growers and C J Vignola Farms with a Kimberlina shed. Over the next days three more sheds planned and several firms set opening dates, with total Shafter harvest work for more than 1,000 people and 8276 area acres in Kern County. Continued on page 9.
