A 72 species mounted animal collection from John Lachenmaier is offered to Shafter for a simple building and staff. Mayor Maier backs the plan, forming a city committee to pursue the display, inviting broad community support to attract visitors and educate residents.
A class of 170 will receive diplomas at the fifty fifth annual graduation exercises at Richland School in Shafter on Wednesday June 11 at 7 p.m. Patrick Wong will be master of ceremonies. Lauretta Schellenberg Rebecca Kliewer and Don Camp will speak. The program includes a pledge, invocations, and a girl’s choir.
Shafter residents gathered in Memorial Park Cemetery for a Memorial Day service honoring war dead. Leslie L. Robinson Post 213 sponsored the event with speakers Jack Duncan and Rev. R F Lindley, praising the sacrifice of over a million Americans and urging remembrance of names and deeds.
Kern County School District announces changes at Shafter High School with Neal Olsen named vice principal effective July 1 and Charles Van Blair named counselor and English teacher to succeed Olsen. Olsen has led student activities and athletics since 1966, with Van Blair serving since 1959.
Shafter readies its annual Potato Festival Days spanning Thursday through Saturday with 30 sponsoring merchants, street closures on Friday and Saturday, free ride tickets for kids, and live music from the Shafter High School Studio Band and Richland School orchestra.
Richland School Board approved contracts for Cooke and Barber among major agenda items. The meeting advanced plans for two new school units, rehired classified personnel, and accepted the resignation of executive secretary Mrs Annabel Thompson after 15 years. Evelyn Little will replace her effective July 12. Resignation of two more staffers noted.
Additional pictures of students honored at the annual Scholastic Achievement banquet will be in this edition. The Lerdo School group repeats with complete heads after a previous error, and last week’s four-school set also appears with space limits noted.
Airman Henry Hernandez son of Mr and Mrs Agustin Hernandez of Shafter has graduated from a Air Force technical school at Lowry AFB Colo Dr E David Cooke wins contract for third term as superintendent of Richland School District Eyron Barber hired for 1969 70 term to return for fourth year at Bakersfield Junior College.
