Supervisors urged to build county migrant labor camp at Edison
James Bakersfield attorney presented the Citizens' Sanitation and Redevelopment Committee recommendations to Kern County Supervisors for a 250 family migrant camp in Edison. He cited 1948 outbreaks of diarrhea and polio linked to poor migrant housing and noted Kern General Hospital spent over 100000 on fighting diseases plus burial costs for 42 victims. The plan calls for a temporary camp with basic sanitary facilities, to ease immediate local health risks while acknowledging broader federal and state scope. A 1949 epidemic period looms, and officials urged prompt action with statewide cooperation being explored.
