The Shafter 20-30 Club finalized plans for the annual Pre-Harvest Dance set for May 7 at the Shafter Woman's Club House. Tickets are on sale via club members, with two teams organizing sales led by Al Suckut and Dave Channeson.
Shafter High School marks the completion of its final cast for the three act comedy We Shook the Family Tree to be staged in the gymnasium Friday April 8 at 8 PM. Cast led by Margrette Smithberg includes Bertram Fuller Beverly Duke Betty Taylor Dewayne Neufeld Kay Raney Sybie Nelms Jerry Johns John Kelly Evelyn Rikard Mary Channeson Mariann Devlin and Goldie Gipson. Production staff features Henrietta Ray Mary Edwards James Crabb Donna Baughman and Doris Gilwitz with a ticket sale contest under their direction. Posters by Drama Club members promote ticket sales in school and local businesses.
Firefighters from Shafter Fire Department were called to the Shafter Experimental Farm Friday at 9 28 a m when a motor in the pumphouse developed a short circuit. Damage was estimated at 150 dollars and limited to the motor and pump room interior. The pump will require rewiring before further use.
Mrs Mary Linley Taylor will present an address titled Recent Observations in the Orient on Wednesday evening April 6 at 7 30 p m in the Woman's Club House. The event is sponsored by the Wednesday Afternoon Club and open to the public. Taylor will share her experiences in Russia India Korea China and Japan.
Entries for the Shafter Potato Festival parade on May 21 pour in as locals hesitate. Paula Schirmer notes many out of town groups already entered while several Kern County and Delano organizations submit floats bands mounted units and decorated cars.
The 2030 Club Rodeo Committee announces Montie and Louise Montana, the World’s Greatest Trick Ropers, have signed for the Shafter Potato Festival Rodeo. They will perform trick roping and riding with educated horses during both shows and ride with a mounted group in the parade.
Impressive funeral services were held for Ivan Stone 46 who died from burns after a butane gas line explosion at the Shafter Public Utility District plant. Earl Unruh remained in fair condition at Mercy Hospital Bakersfield as coroner’s inquest ruled Stone’s death. Stone lit a cigarette inside a building after Unruh blew out a line igniting fumes. The coroner’s inquest was led by Kern County officials with testimony from district and fire personnel. Burial was in Union Cemetery Bakersfield with services at Flickinger-Janzen Mortuary.
City of Shafter requires all dogs to be vaccinated and wear both vaccination and city license tags. Dogs without tags after April 2 will be impounded. Vaccination day is April 2, 1949 at the County Fire House on Central Highway from 9 a.m. to noon. F. G. Shaw, City Clerk. Public notices March 25 and 29, 1949.
Regular Friday luncheon of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce will be held at Cawelo Motel while the council purchases a new police car a tree spray rig and a traffic signal. Chamber officers announced the transfer of meeting controls to Cawelo for the next few weeks.
Two major purchases won council approval including a 1949 Plymouth police car bought from Irvin E. Fike and a “Iron Age” tree sprayer using the old street sweeper’s motor. The sprayer costs 700 to 800 dollars with 250 down and 250 yearly for two years. The council also authorized a 280 dollar traffic signal for the Central and James intersection and addressed door to door soliciting and a new used car dealers bond requirement. Lloyd Hawkins received a used car license contingent on a full business license.
Three talented girls win last Friday's Talent Contest and earn an all expenses paid trip to Hollywood. Louise Jenkins Irene Sade and Mariann Devlin will tour a major movie studio and visit Hollywood highlights as top prize recipients from nineteen entrants. Master of Ceremonies Bill Elliott introduces acts as Jenkins sings Accent a ue the Positive and Sade performs Minnie Pearl while Devlin sings Indian Love Call. Irene Sade travels with teachers Thomas Letizia and Ruth Hilbert.
Jim Moquist spoke at the Shafter Kiwanis luncheon at Cawelo Motel about railway operating battalions in World War II. He described duties during battle and after hostilities, noting 20 000 box cars and 900 locomotives in action in Europe. Attendees included Bert Ware Hanley Witcher and visiting Bakersfield Kiwanians.
The Rotary Club met Tuesday noon at Motel Canelo for a member participation program. Dr. O G Ohlsson presided as debates by members covered timely subjects. President Glen Nay led a short business session with forty two members present and five absent. Visiting Rotarians included Howard Dickson Bakersfield Melvin McConnell Tulelake M G Hitchcock Hanford and S S Ricardo Bill Hallock and Millard C Gibson Delano. Guests were Ray Dallam and George W Collins Shafter.
Wasco High School Mixed Chorus of 63 voices under director Larry Stalin performs sacred and secular numbers plus solos duets and a humorous skit at Maple P T A open house on Tuesday evening April 5 from 7 30 to 8 00. Principal R E Gribble invites parents and friends to visit classrooms see exhibits and meet teachers while first grade mothers serve refreshments.
Notice states Shafter entrants in the Kern County Art Competition may leave exhibits at the Shafter Branch Library. The Shafter art committee will collect and hold them to determine if a local contest can be staged. If not, exhibits may be entered in the final May competition.
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary convene next Tuesday at 7 00 p m in the Congregational Church with an outstanding program. The Odako campfire girls will present and act as hostesses led by Marion Rickner. Miss Martha Johnson will be the honored speaker and nurse at a Bakersfield hospital who has served in Peru Chile and Colombia.
Leslie L. Robinson Post 213 American Legion will hold its first April meeting Monday night April 4 at 8 o clock in the Woman's Club House. Commander Lee Thomas said several committee reports will be presented for members to approve.
Miss Geri Kesser of San Fedro visits Thursday and Friday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Merwin Schirmer in Shafter. She is described as a cousin of Mr. Schirmer.
