Death of Sophie Schwandt longtime Shafter resident
Mrs Sophie Silver Schwandt aged 66 died Tuesday in a Bakersfield hospital. She had lived with her husband Ralph at 647 Santa Fe Way Shafter for 18 years. Final rites Saturday at 2 30 pm at Shafter Pentecostal Church of God burial in Shafter Cemetery Rev E L Bradhurst officiating. Pallbearers named. Born in Germany she came to the United States at age 2 later living in Iowa and North Dakota before moving to Shafter in 1931.

Festival Queen Contest Entries Officially Open

Noted Artist Sam Harris Demonstrates for Shafter Art Association
Sam Hyde Harris, famed San Gabriel artist, demonstrated for the Shafter Art Association and shared his approach to landscape painting. Over fifty observers from Shafter and Wasco studied his composition planning, color use, and brushwork while Harris discussed value, tone, and feeling. He donated the final painting to the association and spoke of mentoring young painters, including ties to Los Angeles Business Men's Art Institute.

Legion Favors Memorial Day Observance In Shafter
Leslie L. Robinson Post 213 of the American Legion voted unanimously to hold a Memorial Day observance in Shafter. More than 50 members met at the Woman's Club with Commander Lee Thomas presiding. Citizens warned about a rumor in last Tuesday's paper claiming a man must wear Western garb between April 18 and May 21. The notice cautions readers to expect vigilantes.
Services Held For Rev. B. J. Friesen
Funeral services for Rev. B. J. Friesen who died March 10 in Portland were held March 16 at the Wasco First Baptist Church. He was 69. Interment followed at Union Perpetual Cemetery in Bakersfield. Friesen, born October 19, 1880 in Petersburg Nebraska, taught in Minnesota and Kansas before studying at McPherson College and Rochester Theological Seminary. He served as pastor in Bakersfield and Oregon and later led the Stafford Church rebuilding project.
