The sophomores upset the favored seniors 86 to 83½ to win the interclass track meet at Shafter High School. Mervin Olson and Morton Wiedman led with multiple firsts. records fell as Wilbert Kirschenmann and Mer ton Wiedman set class marks in shot put. Ted Collins anchored the senior relay and swept events, while Jess Combs and others contributed top finishes across A B and C classes.
Shafter Wasco area moviegoers can expect a busy week with top stars in multiple double bill programs. Priscilla Lane and Jeffry Lynn lead YES MY DARLING DAUGHTER with WEST OF SANTA FE. Clau dette Colbert and Don Ameche star in MIDNIGHT with KING OF THE TURF. THERE GOES MY HEART features Frederic March Virginia Bruce Patsy Kelly plus GAMBLING SHIP with Helen Mack Robert Wilcox. Stage attraction Wednesdays and Fridays draws local crowds. March 30 31 previews WIFE HUSBAND AND FRIEND with Warner Baxter Loretta Young Binnie Barnes Cesar Romero and LET US LIVE with Henry Fonda and others.
Bakersfield hosted a Kern County Coordinating council on recreation meeting attended by Shafter representatives H. J. Harder and A. N. Mougin. The group favored recreation primarily for young adults, noting schoolchildren are already served by schools. Ideas included night baseball volleyball tennis horseshoes and marbles. Further meetings are planned.
Local police under Chief Murray Arnold photograph all prisoners to maintain comprehensive records. Two copies per person planned, with potential third for those charged with felonies. Copies kept at the police office, sent to the FBI, and to the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Sacramento when applicable.
A Kern County Relief Administration dispute prompts an assembly committee on social service aid to hold a hearing. State Relief Administrator H. Dewey Anderson testified in Bakersfield last week about asserted policy dictation and personnel changes by the Workers' Alliance and allied groups.
