Shafter Future Farmers plan to exhibit hogs at the twelfth annual Inter state Junior Livestock Show hosted with the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island. First Mennonite Church Convention Held In Shafter
The 19th annual California state Sunday School and Christian Endeavor convention met at the Shafter church from Friday evening through Sunday noon. About 200 guests from Los Angeles Upland Reedley Paso Robles and San Marcos attended. Leaders included Gust Linscheid Vernon Neufeld Leonard Wishe and John Janzen with speakers Dr John A Hubbard H B Dirks W A Regier David Schultz and J J Paner. Missionary P W Penner spoke of India work and plans to return there. The San Marcos church near Paso Robles accepted to host the next convention.

Fishing Job Under Way At Van Ness No 2
A fishing operation is under way at General Petroleum’s Van Ness No 2 in the Shafter oil field after a string of drill pipe was lost at a depth of 5476 feet. Workers are cutting and removing pipe from the hole. At Caldwell No 1 casing has been set at 11384 feet and drilling continues toward an oil sand. Wagner No 4 derrick teardown begins, with plans to move it to Buena Vista lake district for a new well.

Private services were held Saturday in Hanford for Mrs Christine Smith of Shafter wife of Dale Smith principal of Kern Academy who took her own life Thursday morning at the Smith home two miles southwest of town An inquest in Bakersfield returned a verdict of death by own action with investigators noting an eye disease may have contributed Testimony said she woke about 430 am to a gunshot and was found with a bullet wound in the chest A .38 caliber revolver and powder marks on her left hand were cited to indicate her pulling the trigger with her right hand

Future Farmers Weigh Wool Blankets Plan at Shafter High
Future Farmers at Shafter High School consider a class project to sleep between blankets made from wool sheared at the school farm. About 130 pounds of wool would be sent to an eastern mill to manufacture blankets for sale to benefit the local chapter. Eight pounds of wool per blanket would yield around 16 blankets.
