Local students shine at Kern County Honor Music Festival
Twelve Richland Junior High students joined 22 districts in a 79 piece orchestra and a 107 piece band, after January auditions and four rehearsals. The Bakersfield Convention Center concert on February 25 drew a standing ovation. Daniel Hiebert earned first chair baritone sax, Mitchell claimed first chair trumpet, Diana Delgado had a solo, and Michelle Starrh and Katie Denney repeated as honor group members. Richland band director Ken Gross co-chaired the honor orchestra.

Richland School District held the annual Science Fair with Sequoia Junior High among participants. Winners from Richland Junior High include Laura Salvador tied for third in sixth grade, Mitchell Deatherage tied for third in eighth grade, Francisco Camargo tied for second in seventh grade, John Monsma tied for second in sixth grade, and Daniel Sanchez winning first place in eighth grade. They receive trophies and advance to the county science fair in Bakersfield.
