Cross Erected Marking Southern Baptist Convention Birthplace
The First Southern Baptist Church of Shafter and friends completed a 15 foot cross on the church site on May 3 2003. Built to honor the Lord and remember the 13 families who started the Southern Baptist Convention in California in 1940. Plans by David Kadel and helped by John Kadel with Eagle Sandblasting and Marvin Graves cement work. The church was organized May 10 1936 by farm laborers seeking a faith community during the Depression era.
