The Shafter council reviews a 28.9 million dollar spending plan for 2003 04 with a projected year end balance around 27.6 million. Citizens discuss reserve funds labeled rainy day and the impact on city services as preparations for the next fiscal cycle proceed.
Erik Sherman 21 of Shafter returns home from four years aboard the USS Constellation after his Navy duty ended. A Shafter High School 1999 graduate, he completed boot camp in Chicago in August 1999. His grandmother Dorothy Sherman notes his duties included navigation aboard the carrier.
A Kern County law enforcement foundation recognizes Shafter Officer Courtney for community service. Courtney spent about 30 hours weekly supervising students and racing at Mesa Marin through September, though none of this was on duty and he received no compensation. His wife is thanked for his time away from home as eleven other Kern County individuals are also acknowledged for service.
Shafter High School Varsity Boys win first in Sequoia Sierra Small Schools Division on May 15 2003 at Coalinga led by Robert Gomez with first in 400 meters and top finishes in 300 hurdles 110 hurdles and 200 meters. Yosemite High School led overall with strong season and won team title as coaches Dirk McJunkin and assistants Matt and Mike Polley guided a team haul. The Girls team placed third with Adia Smith second in triple jump and discus, Santana Gonzales third in 800 meters, and pole vaults among top 4.
A new center opened by invitation only on May 20 2003 with no media fanfare. Its footprint covers 132 acres though the building spans 42 acres, about the size of 35 football fields. The event was held in states including Texas Colorado and another location.
