Community Wide Blood Drive across Kern County Seeks Donors
The annual Community Wide Blood Drive runs August 1 to 20 to boost supplies for Kern County. Thirty six groups host mobiles, with six public sites in Bakersfield and nine elsewhere. Sponsors San Joaquin Community Hospital and Kaiser Permanente offer entrant prizes including a Disneyland trip and six $100 gas cards. Donors can visit 5900 Truxtun Ave Bakersfield or join mobile units in Shafter August 5 from 9 am to 1 pm.

Distinguished Young Woman Rose Marie Cota to compete at state
Shafter High School student Rose Marie Cota will compete at the state Distinguished Young Woman event in Bakersfield. The pageant runs July 28 to 30 at Harvey Auditorium with 40 contestants, and Cota stays with a host family July 22 to 30. Contestants are judged on talent interview fitness academics and self expression.
