Shafter Street Faire Returns July 14 Downtown Center
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture Street Faire resumes its summer event on July 14 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. It will be held on Central Avenue in Downtown Shafter to boost local business and community spirit. Debbe Haley notes the move back to Central Ave after trying California and James Streets, citing positives and local input.

Former Shafter football star fatally shot after deputy encounter
David "Deacon" Turner a 56 year old Shafter High School standout who played for SDSU and in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals was shot and killed after allegedly striking Kern County Deputy Wesley Kraft with two beer cans during an arrest at a Bakersfield Fastrip on July 10. Deputy Kraft fired twice, Turner died at Kern Medical Center after 2 40am. Deputy Aaron Nadal was treated and released for head injury. Kraft placed on administrative leave as investigation continues.

Local Tigers TKD students dominate national Tae Kwon Do event
Tigers TKD from Shafter and Wasco shined at the 2011 Tae Kwon Do Nationals in San Jose. Twenty two students earned 45 Gold, 10 Silver, and 45 Bronze medals across ages 7 to nearly 30 with Olivia Bryant qualifying for a U S Olympic team trial and others set for Seoul international tournaments.

Shafter’s Community Correctional Facility faces closure
The Shafter CCF may close by November 30 as California trims budget spending. About 50 workers could lose their jobs while the city seeks to redirect inmates to county facilities. Other CCFs in Delano and Taft face similar pressures. City Manager John Guinn criticizes state restructuring that shifts low level inmates to counties, arguing it raises costs and burdens taxpayers. Guinn lobbied in Sacramento to reverse the move.
