Rape attempt near elementary school in Shafter
A 15 year old girl was attacked while jogging near E Fresno Avenue and pulled into an orchard. The assailant, Edwin Guzman, 18, was identified by evidence, confessed, and jailed on Kidnap for Rape and related charges with a $1,000,000 bail. Hearing set August 9 in Kern County Superior Court North Division.

Shafter shelter redefines care with top notch facility
Shafter Animal Shelter led by Officer Shyanne Schull operates a high quality complex with separate dog and cat units and space to quarantine ill animals. Adoption remains strong but capacity is tight, urging owners to rehome responsibly and volunteers to help. Adoptions also held Saturdays at PetSmart in Bakersfield, 11 00 am to 4 00 pm, with three staff and many volunteers. For more information call 746-2140.

Green Hotel in Shafter Undergoes Renovations for Preservation
The Green Hotel built in 1913 and listed on the National Historic Landmarks register has new roofwork designed to last 60 to 80 years. Volunteers and donors sustain the volunteer-run facility as plans include exterior grounds work while preserving its historic downtown presence.

Redevelopment funds aid Walker Street storm drain finish
City Manager John Guinn credits redevelopment funds for completing the Walker Street storm drain project between Central and Manuel Avenues. The $406,000 bill was covered by $361,000 from a Community Development Block Grant and $40,000 from the Shafter Community Development Agency, enabling flood control improvements and other North Shafter sewer work.
