DPBIAA Meets With County Agency Over Development Plans

The Downtown Parking and Business Improvement Area Association board met July 17 with Kern County Community Development Department officials led by Bill Mungary to review infrastructure and housing programs. Shafter qualifies for KCCDPD services via a 1983 84 census. Staff outlined agency roles and funding flexibility from ECCDPD, with plans to hire a marketing focus and push a downtown marketing plan. The group discussed communications with KCCDPD and Kern Council of Governments, with meetings set to discuss a downtown street reconstruction celebration on August 7.

Shafter Wasco justice court site debated at Kern budget hearing

Ten or more Shafter residents attended the Kern County budget hearing in Bakersfield to push for locating a new Shafter Wasco justice court. Wasco officials argued for Wasco site, citing a study discrepancy, while Shafter officials outlined facility advantages. Additional hearings are scheduled for July 25 and July 29 with all sessions open to the public.

MFAD selects waste site near Runway 256 at July meeting

At the Minter Field Airport District meeting on July 16 the board approved a toxic waste containment facility north of Runway 256 on non contaminated ground west of the contaminated area. Directors Almberg White Ryker voted yes while Nelson abstained and Martin reported county project approvals.

Weather note on heat and rain from USDA station

A USDA weather station north of town reported 100 degree heat on Monday, followed by Monday night rain that cooled dust and reduced garden watering. The report notes caution to water carefully and assess moisture.

Farmers press rate relief at Kern County PUC hearing

About 150 people attended the California Utilities Commission hearing in Bakersfield on July 18. Farmers and other speakers urged lower rates for PG and E, calling for competition and cost-based pricing as officials and advocacy groups listened. No decision expected until year end.

Year of Shafter C of C goal sparks city project plan

Shafter community leaders discuss a “Year of Shafter” effort to unite clubs, schools, churches, and citizens in selecting and pursuing a list of city projects over a year.
