W C Walker Senior Center Opens in Shafter
After years of planning and months of work the 505 Sunset Avenue facility opened with dedication rites led by Kern County figures and community leaders. Roy Ashburn announced July 11 1986 as W C Walker Day as the board honored longtime volunteer Bill Walker for his service at Shafter Convalescent Hospital and AARP. The event featured pledge, invocation, speeches, a ribbon cutting, and a luncheon with the Walker family present.

Chee-mok Chan Receives AGD Fellowship and Honor
Chee-mok Chan earned the 34th annual AGD fellowship after receiving a Doctorate of Dental Science with honors in 1978. He passed the AGD exam in basic science and related dental fields in 1984 and completed 500 hours of continuing education over ten years, finishing 500 hours in six weeks of the specialty course held on Monday July 14. Chan’s wife Millie moved to Shafter in 1979. they married in 1975 after meeting at Loyola Linda University. Chee-mok Chan was born in mainland China and moved to Hong Kong at age six. Millie is a Hong Kong native.
