Imitation Ice Cream Regulation Debate in California
Dairy leaders urged state officials to allow imitation ice cream to be produced in existing plants as industry groups warn of business losses otherwise. A hearing led by C. J. Carey and O. A Ghigoile explored proposed rules to let imitation products be manufactured and sold in the same facilities as real ice cream. The regulation aims to reinterpret current law. the imitation will compete with real ice cream priced about one third lower and uses vegetable oils like cotton seed oil.
