Lerdo School Bid Approved for 329687 in Bakersfield

LERDO W DFOOTE CO of Bakersfield granted the Lerdo School contract for 329687. Gerald Miller announces. 210 days to complete. State finance approval required. bond issue of 95000 adopted. Plan provides 11 classrooms, admin unit, kindergarten, cafeteria and capacity for 401. New site across Lerdo highway near Minter Village. completion expected next spring.

Father Rescues Two Sons From Reservoir Near Home

Robert Thomas of Shafter is credited by county firemen with saving two of his sons from a large adjacent reservoir. The three boys lived at the Thomas home where the water danger had long worried their parents. The two younger boys Jerry aged 4 and David aged 2 slipped into the gate and wandered to the water where they fished, waded, and drifted toward the deep section. Thomas reached them in time and used resuscitation to revive both boys. The eldest Bruce, 6, was sent to Camp Mubane feed yard for safety as the rescue occurred.

Construction Crews Begin Work on 99 Lerdo Crossing

Construction work on U.S. 99 at Lerdo Highway advances after Shafter Chamber support. Hemrick and Easter Co. of Santa Maria starts grading and paving to widen approaches between Snow Road and Cawelo. Low bid of 148,576 dollars covers crossovers, frontage roads, and connections. A lighting system bid around 12,000 dollars is also advertised for Cawelo intersection.

Young swimmers seek AAU prizes at Jefferson Pool

Shafter youths from Richland Swim Club will compete in the Venal Open Swim Meet in Bakersfield with 13 year old Verna Peters leading girls 14 and under. Twelve and under Diane races and 16 and under events highlight a strong Shafter showing with multiple winners and placers at Richland pool and upcoming Kern County events.

Chamber Salutes Shafter Firm Leader at Luncheon

Harold Wiens, 33, operator of Shafco, will be saluted as the second new member of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce. The luncheon Friday at Lee's Dining Room will follow the regular meeting, which will review proposed bylaw amendments. Wiens is a Bakersfield native who came to Shafter in 1942 after WWII Air Force service and now shares a Lerdo highway home with wife Rose and two sons, Rodney and Gordon.

Local Aquacade to Feature Shafter Youths July 31

The annual Summer Aquacade at Richland Aquatic Center highlights local talent led by Kenny Melvin. Postmaster Sets New Lobby Hours

Postmaster George Guenther announced new lobby hours for the postoffice. The main lobby will be open 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and windows 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. five days a week, closing at noon on Saturday. He warned Shafter area residents the penalty for defacing government property is one year in prison and a $1000 fine.
