Architect Ernest L. McCoy said bids for the Richland Districts primary project should be ready for advertising before September after state architecture approval. The $650000 project nears completion as two weeks remain to finalize structural and engineering ties.

North Kern Golf Group Opens Drive for Members

The North Kern Golf Association launches a membership campaign to grow a new golf course in the Shafter area. Bill Duerksen of Shafter chairs the effort with L J Woodard and P C Clara as executives. The group had discussed sites with the Kern County Board of Supervisors and settled on foothill country north of Famoso as optimal.

New Member to Receive First Salute in Shafter

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce will salute W. L Verri Schmidt a 29 year old service station operator as a new member this Friday at Lee's Dining Room. Schmidt recently took over the Union Service Station at Five Points from Walter Rodgers and arrived in Kern county last November from Stockton. He is a veteran of 13 months in the Army and lives with his wife Dorothy and three children Phyllis Steven and Karen at Kern Homes.

Kern County Maid Contest Draws Eighte n Beauty Title

Norma Neumann leads eight county hopefuls in Bakersfield Cotton Festival Maid of Cotton contest at 4 p m July 25 at Bakersfield Inn pool. Judge E K Grant reports two Shafter area motorists were fined 150 dollars each for drunk driving. Identified are Robert L Mackey 21 Minter Village and Luther Vernon Brown 21 Sly's Trailer Court. Mackey also faced a hit and run collision and will pay restitution for damages to the other car.

A neighbor spotted flames atop the pumphouse on the Ed Neufeld ranch in Shafter county and battled the fire with pails of water until firefighters arrived. Officials cited engine sparks and an uninsulated exhaust pipe as the fire’s cause.

Mrs Lassiter Wins First in Shafter Cartoon Contest

Mrs J W Lassiter of 240 California Avenue won the $15 top prize in the Shafter Press Hi Neighbor cartoon contest. She correctly identified all but one of the business personalities in the drawing among dozens of entries. Second place went to Mrs Charles Hitchcock of Jack Avenue and third to Mrs Connie Mills, also of Jack Avenue, each receiving $7.50 and $2.50 respectively.

Shafter police crackdown targets fire engine chasers in a public safety effort. Offenders face up to a $500 fine and six months in jail. the ordinance requires vehicles not on official business to stay at least one block away and not park within 300 feet of a responding fire apparatus.

Lightning strikes twice at Peters home in Shafter

A palm tree on the Peters’ ranch in Shafter was struck by lightning last Monday morning and the bolt jumped to the house, causing about 5000 in damage to their $50,000 home. The palm tree remained undamaged and Mrs. Peters received a scare but no serious injuries.
