A feasibility study of an earth-fill barrier across San Francisco Bay is funded with 500000 to guide engineering and economic assessment. Board led by A D Edmonston will work with outside consultants and a committee including H W Kelly and F Presley Absher to ensure an unbiased analysis sought by state agencies and agricultural groups. June Building Permits Drop in Shafter
Shafter issued building permits totaling 18 775 in June, well below last year's 55 400. Inspector E K Grant reported the month’s total as one of the lowest in years and bringing year to date to about 260 000 with two new homes listed. One home is by Dandy Homes and the other by Bertha Reimer.

Jamboree-Bound Scouts Prepare for National Campfest
Twenty four Shafter area Boy Scouts prepare to attend the National Jamboree at Irvine Ranch July 17 to 23. The North Kern Troop will lead the county presence with a pre Jamboree training camp at Jastro Park and a regular unit to be established for trail to Newport Harbor. North Camp youth program expands with Bible school period
In North Shafter the North Camp recreation program serves 100 youths with five day schedules 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. it covers games crafts and a story hour. Two weeks feature a Bible school from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and extended playground time. The camp hosts a missionary couple Charles and Mary Ovey and other speakers from Moody Bible Institute and churches in the area.

Speeder Fined 250 After 20 Mile Chase
