The Kern High School District Board votes to keep Shafter and other schools on current start times. A report cites dawn timing, daylight for most riders, safety concerns, student leadership opposition, and potential after school activity disruption.
Shafter police investigate two thefts from the past week. Clyde McIllwain reports $300 of tools stolen from a truck parked outside his West Ash home. Frank Salyard says a $52 stereo was taken from his locked car on Pacific Street.
In Justice Court five men faced DUI charges. Geoil Odom pleaded not guilty. Anthony Bellou of Buttonwillow pleaded guilty and was fined 250 dollars plus four DWI school sessions and restitution for patrol car damages. Donald Banks of Shafter pleaded guilty and was placed on summary probation with terms to stay off Shafter High School and Mannel Park. Bruce Waldron Wasco Gerald Armstrong Shafter and William Williamson all pleaded guilty to DUI. Waldron faced 60 days in jail plus 10 days for a prior offense. Armstrong was fined 200 dollars or seven days in county jail and Williamson received a 30 day suspended jail term with four DWI classes and a 190 dollar fine.
