Rainfall Update From Shafter Sees Season Total Linger Behind
Wet spell last week adds a few inches to Shafter area totals while the season sum remains below last year’s 4.95 inches. Temperatures topped near 80 degrees on Tuesday, signaling an early spring feel. Data from the USDA Cotton Research Station show daily highs and lows from Jan 14 to Jan 21 and a season total of 3.05 inches, compared with 4.95 inches a year ago.

Jury Finds Two Guilty of Speeding
Two out of town defendants appeared in Shafter Justice Court last Wednesday. L. D. Fitzen of Fresno fined $62 after the jury found him guilty of driving in excess of the speed limit. R. M. Hirohata of Los Angeles fined $24 for the same charge. Deputy District Attorney Dennis Beaver represented the people. Castillo of Shafter pleaded guilty to driving without a valid license driving while intoxicated and open container. He admitted two prior drunken driving charges and was sentenced to 30 days in county jail plus either 50 more days or a $500 plus $125 penalty. Fredrick Garcia pleaded guilty to malicious mischief.

Richland School District Extends Insurance Through July

Booster Club Meeting Schedule at Shafter High
Shafter High School Boosters Club directors set a general meeting for Thursday at 7:30 am in the school cafeteria. They also approved a steak barbecue during the May Potato and Cotton Festival to raise funds, following last year’s event that added 1300 dollars to the club coffers.

Shafter Area Fire Checks Begin Home Safety Program
Kern County firemen will start the annual home safety drive in the unincorporated Shafter area next week. Chief Robert Williams says 75,000 homes have been checked over the past six years for fire hazards. Firemen will visit only with homeowner invitation and inspect rooms and spaces likely to harbor risks.
