Shafter Press February 1964 reports the Rotary Club will mark its 25th anniversary with a luncheon honoring past presidents led by Thomas Leigh who has presided during the anniversary year.
City leaders seek a special census to count 4200 feet for a project while the Flying Saucers collectors contest offers about 500 in prizes. Shafter High honors include six students with straight A’s and a PTA program featuring electron demonstrations by physics seniors.
Mr and Mrs Otto Searcy announce the engagement of their daughter Larah Maxine to William Barclay Young of San Marino. Larah, a 1962 Shafter High School graduate and La Verne College alumna, is a second grade teacher in Azusa. William, son of Mr and Mrs John B Young of San Marino, is in GM Buick Management Training in Flint.
The Business and Professional Women's Club announces its annual Mexican Dinner for Feb 20 at the Veterans Memorial Hall. Tickets cost 50 cents for children under 12 and $1.50 for adults, with takeout available. Irene Tilley chairs the ticket committee. Delois Witcher also serves on the committee. The event supports BPW scholarships and district reports.
Pacific Women Golf Association members have a Play Day on Monday February 10 at North Kern Golf Course. Gladys Snider is the North Kern Women’s Association president and PWGA representative. Several Play Days are planned throughout the year.
The paper prints the complete meringue lemon pie method with egg whites beaten stiff, sugar, cream of tartar, baked layers, lemon yolk filling with lemon juice and rind, and a final whipped cream layer. Chill 24 hours before serving.
The Campus Life program for high school youth in Shafter meets every Tuesday at noon in two sessions at the Union Congregational church social hall. Volunteers, led by Mrs. Robert Smith, provide lunch while Kern County UFC director Mole Cole hosts a short program centered on the Campus Life "Hot Seat" and a spiritual challenge. Interested donors can call 746-6804.
A Shafter group of women golfers traveled to Torrey Pines north of San Diego for a three day outing. June Smith Ginger Somers Katy Ogle and Ruth Hoffmann stayed at Torrey Pines Inn played Torrey Pines, then Singing Hills in El Cajon. Weather turned cold with rain hail and snow on the mountains as they returned via Highway 395 through Mojave and Tehachapi.
The Leslie L. Robinson Post 213 American Legion Auxiliary met on February 4 at 7 30 p m in the Veterans Memorial Hall with Valentine dinner on February 14 as the main topic. A joint dinner with legion members and guests was planned with a barbecue beef menu, social hour at 6 30, dinner at 7, and dancing at 9. Mrs Leon Morgan presided in the absence of Mrs Arlene Beighle. Mrs Wally Mendenhall hosted and served cookies and coffee.
Daniel Jay Costello, weighing 9 pounds 2 1/2 ounces, was born Thursday Feb 6 at Memorial hospital in Little Daniel. He is the fifth generation, with sister Lisa nearing two in March, to parents Mr. and Mrs. Mark Costello of 187 W. Orange. Grandparents: Dan and costello. Jack Sherrell. Paternal great grandparents: Ralph Cope of Mendota and Burton Watson of Duncan, Oklahoma. Maternal great grandparents: S. C. Sherrell of Poplar, California and Mrs. Andrew Adams of Dudley, Missouri.
Mayor J C Atkinson appointed a committee to plan Hudson Park development for recreation. Members are David Anderson Wayne Wood Carl Taffera Tommy Colvard and Jim Grumbles, formed after council discussions on converting the park for hardball and other uses.
Miss Margaret Anne Spear daughter of The Rev and Mrs John Spear and David Doyle Dials son of Mrs R J Wessel and Floyd R Dials married January 11 at Holy Innocents Episcopal Corte Madera California. Officiant Rev Tod W Ewald. Reception at Gregory's Restaurant Corte Madera. Newlyweds honeymooned at Inverness Lodge Tomales Bay Marin County and reside in San Anselmo. There were bridesmaids and a large wedding party with relatives from Bakersfield and Los Angeles.
Mrs. Sarah Jane Woods of Shafter marked her 80th birthday with three celebrations attended by church members, family, and friends. The festivities included gatherings from Jan 29 to a Sunday buffet at 219 E. Lerdo, with visits from relatives across California and Texas and three decorated cakes bearing the inscription Happy Birthday Mother Grandmother and Great Grandmother.
A stereoscope valued at 250 dollars is missing from the Richland district upper grades science room. The room was locked when the loss was discovered and showed no signs of forced entry.
