Hill Receives Silver Star for Heroic Action
Army Specialist Four William R. Hill, 21, of Shafter California, earned the Silver Star near Pleiku Vietnam for staying in an exposed position to hook equipment during an enemy attack. Hill’s actions aided airmobile evacuation of his battery without loss of life or damage to key gear. He entered the Army in August 1967 and trained at Ft. Lewis. He's assigned to Battery A 6th Battalion 4th Infantry Division 29th Artillery. Continued on Page 4.

District To Ask For Bids On New School Bus
The Richland School District plans to solicit bids for a new school bus. Nine buses range from 1947 to 1961. one is good, one very good, others poor to fair. Superintendent Cooke will prepare specs and bid forms. delivery would be next fall. Funds include $5,000 from the City for Santa Fe tract, about $27,500 bus cost, and roughly $4,000 state funds.

U S Air Force Staff Sergeant John R Hewitt son of Mrs Leonard Williams of Shafter California is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross at Norton AFB California for extraordinary achievement as a C 47 Skytrain flight engineer near Dalat Vietnam May 31 1968. He helped silence enemy fire sites and saved a friendly unit from overrun while defending an allied group. Hewitt a 1949 Shafter High School graduate is assigned to a Military Airlift Command unit at Norton.

Ketchum Reintroduces Radar Bill to Aid Speeders Apprehension

Jan Stuebbe senior at Shafter High School becomes Kern County’s top prep athlete, earning the Jim Tyack Trophy. He has starred as quarterback for three years, guard for the basketball team with 173 points in the South Sequoia League, and set a school scoring record with 37 points in a game. He will receive the award February 19 at the Vineland Father and Sons banquet in Bakersfield. He plans to pole vault and run the relay in track season and earned all league honors in basketball and football for the second time.
