The Shafter Cotton Research Station reports current weather conditions impacting cotton research and fieldwork. Temperature ranges and precipitation expectations influence irrigation planning and pest management decisions for growers nearby.
A cooperative plans a $1,000,000 carrot packing plant in Shafter using 25 000 square feet of the General Potato and Onion Distributors building on Lerdo Highway. Operations start by May 7 with 60 to 80 workers. harvests begin in May and a second run is planned for November. Roadway annexations and city sewer and water lines accompany the project.
Rev. Henry Dick resigns after 11 1/2 years as pastor of Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church to head the national office in Fresno as executive general secretary. He will oversee regional secretaries in Southern Central and Pacific areas and guide initiatives including church integration of NC and Texas membership groups, a chaplaincy program, and strengthened ties with Pacific College and Tabor College.
The Shafter Generals lead the South Sequoia League despite a 49-39 loss to Taft as Garces and Wasco win their games. Garces beat the Wildcats 57-51 and Shafter defeated Arvin 56-51 leaving two games remaining. A title hinges on upcoming Shafter versus Garces and other league results.
Twenty nine people attended the Shafter Improvement Council’s first meeting of the year on Thursday February 13 at 7 pm in the Veterans Memorial Hall. Mrs H W Pat Kelly led the business session with reports from chairmen on beautification efforts and park improvements including a rough sketch to modify Manuel Park and remove a hazardous circular driveway.
Eight Shafter grapplers advance to Divisionals in Selma after strong league day. Wayne Forbes 98 Danny Black 141 and Jim Brown 194 won their weight classes with finals pins. Jeo Herrera 106 Johnny Moore 157 and David Kadel 168 took second. Jon Voth 194 and John Hardwick heavy claimed third. Wasco second, Shafter third, McFarland fourth, Taft bottom. Forbes beat Wasco Love in a tight final. Voth pinned Manzano. Valley matches at Bakersfield follow.
In today’s paper an announcement says mail to several foreign ports via New York is now allowed after the Longshoremen’s Union consented to U S mail movement. Roy Farrell reports to the Richland Board on senior fitness noting USC experiments show regular exercisers live six extra years, non-smokers eleven. no tax tips given.
The Mennonite Brethren board meets in Shafter February 28 to March 4 hosted by Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. The 15 member board reviews the past year to guide future services with 340 workers in 20 counties and a $1 540 000 annual budget. Kern County contributions total 30000 from five local churches.
Roy Farrell, fitness instructor for Richland District, told the Board that overall 1968 test scores for both boys and girls exceeded 1963 levels. Some exceptions appeared in 14 15 year old girls 600 yard run 15 year old girls standing broad jump and 50 yard dash and 9 year old girls situps. For boys the exception was 15 year old 600 yard run. Weaknesses cited were pullups for boys and 600 yard run and situps for girls. Farrell spoke further on the district’s physical program.
The Richland School Board was told by the County Schools office that the district's assessed valuation will drop another 137 980 in 1969 70 due to the house. Dr E David Cooke reported a 1 762 500 decline in 1968 69 from the prior year and per pupil state aid fell from 13 240 14 to 12 103 31, a 1 136 83 loss. The district leads local funding at over 56 percent and patrons are generous. President Phil Zachary reported delegates backed the assured level of instructional excellence and statewide property tax by a close vote.
Filing for Richland School Board seats includes Phillip Zachary current president Arthur Penner and David Anderson. Election set for April 15 with three vacancies and noon February 20 filing deadline. Voter registration closes this Thursday at County Clerk Vera Gibson or deputies.
