J W Broxholme of the Civilian Production Administration Los Angeles district says costs will level off in 1947 but not drop much this year. He notes large projects have been cancelled due to high costs, deferring school and institutional expansions that would have created jobs.
The Civilian Production Administration citizens' advisory committee approved 159 non housing construction projects week ending Jan 23. Projects span ten southern California counties with total cost $724,359, while 89 projects were denied totaling $1,323,928, committee chairman Louis M. Dreves reported.
Sacramento announced that California issued 11,412 new corporations in 1946, surpassing the 1930 peak and vastly exceeding 1945 figures. Of these, 10,632 were domestic and 780 foreign firms, with tax figures noted as 9,194 and 764 respectively.
Local officials of the U S Department of Commerce report easing cement bottlenecks and rising output across construction materials. National figures show a 43 percent rise in total industry production from last year, with lumber, brick stocks, cast iron pipe, and plumbing fixtures up while steel lath and metal products remain tight.
