The American Legion approved bringing a carnival to Shafter in spring and to fund its building. A harvest festival with a big parade is proposed to showcase local horses wagon makers and thousands of kids and draw visitors from far away as a community booster event.
Mayor Frizzell announces the drive ends February 15 with over $600 in the account. A recent $573.22 contribution from Panero Theatres supports the local campaign led by building principals and school activities this week.
Funeral services for 1 year 5 month old Joyce Lanutte Smart were held at 10:00 a m Monday at the Janzen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Cecil Poole conducting. Burial followed at Shafter Cemetery. The baby died in Santa Barbara February 6. Father Lester Smart lives in Shafter. mother Lois Smart resides in Santa Barbara.
The city council and the Woman's Club in Shafter unite for a safety campaign begun last week. A Safety Drive meeting at the Woman's Club discussed coordinating ideas with representatives from local clubs, the City, and Police Department to back county wide efforts such as bicycle licensing.
H. D. West announces a new gin at Wheeler Ridge and three additional gins in Tulare County. The Wheeler Ridge plant will be a six stand Murray Gin with modern cleaning and drying gear, cost about 60,000 dollars. The overall expansion plans include planting cotton on several thousand acres and securing water access. Neil Huffsmith of Wasco will manage the Tulare County gins, joining a network of Coberly-West operations in Shafter Delano and Union Avenue with ongoing farming in Lerdo Edison and Shafter districts.
The USDA urges households to serve potatoes twice daily to reduce a large national surplus. It stresses consumer encouragement, especially housewives, as vital to absorbing America’s number one farm surplus through practical consumption.
Tehachapi A team sealed the Sierra League race with a 28 14 victory over Shafter Generals. Taft A slipped to a 2 point win in Taft while Shafter C’s edged Tehachapi 17 16 in two overtimes. Taft C’s beat Shafter C’s 29 19. Tehachapi B’s topped Shafter Colonels 29 14. Taft B swept to 47 9.
Richard James weighs 8 pounds 15 ounces born February 7 at the Cottage Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Penner. A girl born February 2 to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Isaacs of Wasco joins their family.

Shafter joins the nation in celebrating Boy Scout Week the 37th birthday of the movement. Local troops, two aggressive units, mark events from February 7 to 13 with emphasis on service and skills exhibited by Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.
The County Fire Department responded to a tractor fire three miles west on Lerdo at 11:05 Saturday night. The owner is Woods Stone. Fire was under control on arrival with $50 estimated damage.
City Council sets February 17 as the start date for the Clean-up Shafter campaign. A focused week will target streets, vacant lots, yards, and public buildings with waste removal and tree planting emphasized to improve appearance and forward progress.
A crazed Filipino man stabbed three passengers on the Sunset Limited near Phoenix before Phoenix officers stopped him. Harvey Montgomery, 24, of Shafter, was among the wounded. the assailant Susana Barangan, 30, was fatally injured and taken to a hospital.
The Automobile Club of Southern California reports 1.807 million passenger cars entered California in 1946 up 35 percent from 1945 and 280,000 above 1941. An all time high 923,590 out of state cars carried 2,537,098 passengers, totaling 4,935,066 travelers across the state line in 1946.
The City of Shafter urges residents to participate in Clean Up Week from Monday February 17 to Friday February 21. Citizens should fill rubbish cans and use boxes for overflow, aiding the city in keeping the streets clean. Public notice runs January 31 to February 21.

A faculty basketball team will meet high school all stars in Shafter High gym on Thursday afternoon as part of the March of Dimes program. Students will attend and contribute to the polio fund. Newcomers include Dan Bledsoe Cecil Dusty Rhoads and Ernest Graf. Coaches Ray Kitts. Edwin De Mello guest conducts.
Kyle Hill won the 175 pound ground prize pig at the Shafter Rifle and Pistol Club pheasant shoot. Despite stormy wet weather, 40 of 45 pheasants were disposed of. The event was well attended and food was served by the Legion Auxiliary with Mrs. Les Hobson reporting it a successful project.

The Los Angeles VA mobile office tours Shafter today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in front of the American Legion Hall. VA staff will assist veterans and families with education, on the job training, disability, pensions, medical care, insurance, and other benefits. A recent eastern tour resolved over 1000 veteran issues and reinstated more than $630,000 in life insurance. Veterans should bring discharges and related documents for full service.
