Four hundred housing units for veterans and families at Minter Field could boost Shafter as a local hub. With the field near, over two thousand residents would find convenient shopping and recreation, and the airport’s upgrade could position Shafter as a cargo airport for fruit and vegetable shipments to Eastern markets.
Scout Executive Harper, Field Executive for the northern district, spoke to the Cub Scout Committee on the organization of the committee during the Wednesday evening meeting. The discussion focused on structure duties and improvements to youth program oversight.
The Woman's Club of Shafter plans a public meeting Monday at 8 00 p m at the clubhouse to discuss a safety drive. The Wednesday Afternoon Club completed campaign plans at its Board meeting presided over by Mrs Ed Brown and invites organizations and the public to participate.
Richland School leagues push toward the second round. In boys A League Stanford and Army lead while Colgate is strong in B. Girls Starlets under Shirley Hight remain undefeated with 14 straight wins. Varsity edges High School class 13 to 11 in OT, Paul Cato hit the clincher. John Howard top scorer with 5 points. Fifth graders begin their own tourney as Montgomery’s room beats Hunter’s 23 to 5. Jarvis and Tilley field notable entries. Standings posted.

Safety education began at Richland Schools with Monday sessions taught by O. T. m. School Superintendent. The program includes pedestrian and bicycle safety through diagrams and demonstrations, tests for bicycle riders, and a new police patrol during school commute times.

Counterfeit bills are slightly smaller and often carry blue serial numbers G 20940017A. Police urge immediate notification if authenticity doubts arise amid reports of operations around Los Angeles.
The Shafter Rifle and Pistol Club hosts a pheasant shoot this Sunday offering a 175 pound pig grand prize. Events include Trap .22 pistol and high powered rifle shooting with ample pheasants for all participants. Location mirrors the recent Turkey Shoots two miles west on Lerdo from 5 points and two miles south on Searoni Avenue.
At Monday's legion meeting in Shafter, $28,000 was reported to be in the county budget for a new veterans building. Plans were drawn months ago but no definite appropriation reported, with forward motion expected. Gottlieb Rieker donated $50 to the legion building fund, and a letter of thanks was approved. New members were named to the Shafter Veterans Service Center to represent the legion, with Jack Hare chairing the committee along with W. H. Hitchcock Elmer Anderson Harold Miller H. C. Freedman and Phil Horwith. The legion endorsed sponsoring the traveling carnival this May but did not act on a Chamber of Commerce proposal to sponsor the event.
Kern county cotton farmers urged to apply for Federal All-Risk Crop Insurance before February 28, 1947. County Triple A Committee appointed fieldmen to explain the program and urge growers or landlords to visit the Bakersfield office at 2405 M Street. Three coverage levels available, including protection for well failure or ditch water reduction, to safeguard 1947 and future crops.
Bakersfield officials consider converting most Minter Field buildings into veterans housing. Plans include 68 barracks for 400 families, with 90 percent state financing and support from F H A War Assets Administration and local groups. County may repurpose airport facilities and track buildings for storage and warehouse use.
Gus Klassen and John Nale won seats on the Shafter Wasco Irrigation District board. Klassen reelected division 3 over Charles Burns 28 to 11. Nale defeated incumbent John Schroeder division 2 62 to 33. Voters focus on water from the Central Valley Project and district water reservations amid ongoing negotiations.
World War II veterans may join a new agriculture and farming course under the G I Bill. Bob Davidson will teach, with classes beginning Wednesday night in the Shafter High School agriculture room. Veterans should attend and bring proof of service.
The Bakersfield 20 30 club will honor Burr Baldwin an All American from UCLA at a dinner meeting in Bakersfield at Il Trovatore cafe starting at 7 p m Any 20 30 members from Shafter and other clubs are invited Baldwin’s brother is a club member.
Mrs. Bert Ware hosted a Valentine motif supper and bridge Tuesday evening. Prizes for the card session were won by Mesdames Ike Peters Emil Bender J L Hill and E C Eckman. Other guests included Mesdames A Peter Channeson Christina Roscamp Sylvia Baughman Jack Battaglia Ed Brown Glen Putman Joe Cosgrove and George Vannatta.
Lowell Todd head of Shafter high school physical education spoke to the Shafter Kiwanis about archery. He described safety, skill, and facts about the sport and performed archery at various distances showing accuracy near the bullseye. Todd began archery at Garden Grove high school and in 1932 set the world record for 800 yards in St Louis.
The Shafter 20-30 club will send 50 sacks of top-grade Shafter potatoes to the national 20-30 convention in San Antonio this August. Long whites will be served at convention meals and in San Antonio restaurants. Place cards will advertise Shafter and its spuds during the trip. A sizeable delegation from Shafter will travel to Texas for the event.
