Fireplace safety tips and risks rise with more built in fires
Kern County Fire Chief Carl W Williams notes fireplace fires in homes have doubled in two years due to more built in fireplaces and metal freestanding units. He urges three safety steps: use a screen after use, burn only natural wood or manmade logs, and keep children away. Also warns against improper use of man made logs and advises against overloading the firebox. Passive smoking from others may harm small airways as much as smoking ten cigarettes daily.
