Post master George Guenther urged patrons to mail holiday packages early to ensure delivery before Christmas. He noted mailing has been slow so far despite an earlier appeal to the public.
Shafter high's varsity basketball team opened its season Friday night in Taft at the Third Annual Kern County Basketball Carnival. Roy Packard scored 13 in four periods as East Bakersfield High led with 51 points while Wasco held opponents to 29 total. Bakersfield Drillers topped Wasco 45 to 28 with strong showings from the East Bakersfield and Taft squads throughout the event.
California Taxpayers' Association released a study showing Kern County government property tax levy rising to 10,653,887 for the current fiscal year from 7,917,040 last year and 3,969,236 in prewar 1941-42. The group warned Proposition No. 4 could trigger an additional 4,661,000 levy if a 1 tax rate is mandated.
