Legion Meetings Resume January 3
The American Legion OKs a return to meetings on Monday January 3 1949 after a Christmas week break. A recent post dinner drew about 190 attendees with remarks by Commander Lee Thomas Glenn Ney and district commander Rogers. State Commander Rex Whittemore spoke on housing and child welfare and noted his new national housing role. Property Owners Protest Improvement District on Shafter Avenue
City council heard a protest from a majority of Shafter Avenue property owners against Public Improvement District No 3 sidewalk assessments they argue unfairly follow property loss. Six Arrests for Drunkenness and Disturbing the Peace in Shafter
Six suspects were arrested this week by Shafter police on drunkenness and disturbing the peace charges. R. E. Robinson 45 faced a 25 dollar fine and 30 days suspended for a year. Mae 54 and Oley L. Child each got 75 dollar fines and 60 days suspended for two years. William Dunn 38 of Garrison City received a 30 day sentence suspended for a year if he stays out of Shafter. Robert L. Kelley 33 of North Labor Camp was fined 25 dollars with 90 days suspended for one year. Othal Holbrook 35 also 25 dollars with 90 days suspended for two years. A state attorney opinion is awaited on the legality of certain games. A local card game operator was cited for low-ball and a trial set for December 15, postponed to January at the defense request. Alaska’s coastal forests exceed 21 million acres in forest reservations.
