Central Valley Highway group to press state for quick upgrades
A coalition of community leaders from Shafter Bakersfield through Selma will meet in Sacramento with the State Highway Commission to demand immediate improvements to state sections of the Central Valley Highway. The effort, spanning four years, has raised over 400000 and spurred start of other sections. The Central Valley Highway Association pressed hard to keep the project moving.

Civic Football Banquet Highlights Shafter High Awards

Shatter High Students Win Prize Money at FFA Contest
Shatter High School boys topped the beef division at the Future Farmers Efficiency Feeding Contest tied to the Great Western Livestock Show in Los Angeles. Winners include Walter Bergen Aubrey Galbraith Everett Eyraud Leland Kroeker and James Mathis with prizes totaling 130. Kroeker won 50 in pen-of-five first place and Mathis 30 in the same division. Bergen took 30 in the individual division and Galbraith Eyraud each 20. Kroeker and Eyraud earned spots to attend the National Convention of Future Farmers of America in Kansas City.

Building Permits Reach New High
Building permits in Shafter for November totaled 27300 dollars per a report by building inspector E. K. Grant. The record includes a new day building for the Shafter Public Utility District, a potato shed, and remodeling of a private residence. City council approved maps for Public Improvement District No. 2 to widen Shafter Avenue from 60 to 80 feet and add sidewalks curbs and gutters in the Stone and Meyer tracts. Contracts will be let this month with J. W. Goertzen as the contractor in charge.

Unidentified Man Found Dead Near Delano Highway
Police report an unidentified man about 45 found dead on the east side of Highway 99 south of the Delano underpass. Officer Merle Scott and T Delgado assisted as the body was moved to Delano Mortuary for an inquest. Coroner's investigator John Wertz ruled death by natural causes. The man was about 5 feet 10 inches and 140 pounds.

Cotton harvest reaches two thirds of California crop
Nearly 600,000 bales of California's estimated 950,000 bale cotton crop have been harvested, Ralph B. Bunje said, a figure favorable to last year at this time. Ray Provo of Cotton Oil Co. in Fresno noted yesterday's rain slowed picking but did not damage cotton. He added four to five damp days can affect grade, and if no more rain arrives this weekend, picking will continue. he called this the best picking year in history.
