At its Monday night meeting the City Council enforced Ordinance No 132 governing how garbage and rubbish must be stored. Residents and business occupants must use containers that are water tight with a close fitting lid and suitable handles. Garbage containers range from three to thirty two gallons while rubbish containers must be non plastic and not exceed eighty pounds.
The latest shipment to Shafter Library highlights teen oriented non fiction and fiction.Books include Life of George Gershwin and How to Succeed in High School and College Entrance Examinations.
Burley Dooley attended the American Society of Animal Science sessions in Reno along with 1,200 delegates. The four day program covered undergraduate teaching in animal science, student teacher relations and aging in pigs. Reports noted overseas programs and laboratory roles in improving animal science education.
Mr and Mrs H W Pat Kelly return from a three week Capistrano Beach vacation with daughter Melinda and Stephen. Other relatives from Bakersfield Oregon and Fresno join gatherings. They toured Laguna Beach Festival of Arts and the Pageant of the Masters.
Kern County Fair opens Sept 22 with a nine day run. Last day to turn in entries is Sept 2 by 7 p.m. Mail entries must be postmarked by midnight Sept 2. Ceramics and china open to amateurs, professionals may enter non competitively. Coin department co chaired by Warren Pattison Jr. Hobby division restricted to Kern County residents. Bee and leather divisions detailed with class breaks and chairmen. Poultry entries limited to juniors through age 19. Leatherwork entries must be from past two years.
Trinity Lutheran Church of Wasco holds a Monday 7 30 p m student vesper service to bless the new school year for students and teachers. The half hour service features hymns sermonette and a prayer for students with Rev. Robert Bendick leading. Intended for students sixth grade and up. community students invited.
Labor Day observances are set for Old Mission San Antonio near Jalon with a Mass at 10 30 a.m. A Padre Edmund Austin O F M will give a narration on the crafts taught to Indians at San Antonio Mission in early California days. Free exhibits by brown robed friars follow, showcasing over 50 arts and crafts.
The Continuation School within Kern County Union High School District delays its start at the 4th and P Streets campus by one month due to unavoidable delays in classroom installation. The school serves students unable to attend regular high school programs.
North Kern PWGA opens fall season with Sept 7 Blind Holes event chaired by Wanda Stewart. Kernville Sept 14 with $6 entry includes steak. deadline Sept 5.
