School Opening Announced for Richland District
Superintendent Dr David Cooke announced Richland Schools will open on Tuesday September 5 with administrative meetings to prepare for staff and students. Pre registration for new students in grades kindergarten to third runs August 28 29 and 30 from 9 am to 12 noon and 1 to 4 pm at the Primary School office. Registration for grades seven and eight starts at 8 am on the first day of school at the district library and upper grades at 331 Shafter avenue. Parents should bring health history doctor preference address phone numbers and siblings in school. Birth certificates or proof of age are required for certain new entrants.

Variance Granted for Christensen Mobile Home Park
Don and Lorraine Christensen won a variance from the Planning Commission on August 15 to develop a modern mobile home park in the old Richland County Park area. Seven conditions were set, including excluding the southern 145 feet, a six foot concrete block wall around the facility, and that only mobile homes may be placed on the lots.

Last day to enter Kern County Fair livestock and mechanics
Kern County Fair manager Cy Allen urges exhibitors that August 26 is the closing date for entries in livestock and agriculture mechanics divisions. Entry office hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Albert Goode Auditorium. Premiums total 59,546 with specific sums for beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, carcass cut-out, and mechanics.

Shafter Fire Department reports second quarter activity
The Shafter Fire Department answered 18 city calls in the second quarter per Chief Clifford Ratzlaff. Fire loss totaled 330 dollars on five calls with 101,375 dollars in saved buildings and furnishings. The largest insured structure valued at 80,000 dollars had no loss. Ten resuscitation calls and two emergencies occurred including a child locked in a truck. One county fire call involved the Shafter department. The period used 19 paid drivers, 51 volunteers and nine county personnel.

Freeway Opened with Ribbon Cutting Rites
A new 11.3 mile section of Interstate 5 between Lerdo Highway and Highway 46 near Lost Hills opened with ribbon cutting last Thursday. A second 24 mile stretch from Lerdo to Taft Highway east of Enos Lane is bid at 8.7 million dollars by E C Young and Maxwell, with state approval expected around September 1 and completion in about two years.
