The Shafter City Council reviewed how unsecured taxes were omitted in county bills and discussed a new billing cycle. City Clerk Bill Johnston requested confirmation of the factor rate as the city shifts billing and assessment procedures to the county for the first time.
Michael Cooke son of Dr and Mrs E Cooke 272 Pine leaves Los Angeles International Airport for Paris France. He travels three weeks with his mother and plans to hunt with his French uncle. He will study agriculture management science and engineering at UC Davis after returning in September. He previously spent summer at Davis on a bees project.
The City Council endorsed Ordinance No. 132 enforcing trash and garbage standards. It also heard a variance appeal by Don Christensen for a mobile home center at Richland Park, with residents seeking full residential zoning and a hearing set for October 30. A petition with 184 signatures urged buying Richland Park for a public park, and Violet Hemingson Martin resigned from the planning commission.
Theurer reports to Shafter Press that he sent tax transmittal to the assessor on June 28 and a copy is sought. The County Board cites Ordinance 171 and ad valorem rate 1.224 per 100 and orders data processing to compute sums and mail supplements. Theurer notes tax bills are typically mailed by the assessor's office.
Kelly Blanton, a former Palm Avenue School teacher, becomes Maple Elementary District superintendent succeeding Clyde Johnston who moves to Maricopa Union. Blanton, a Wasco native and graduate, earned a master's degree and has coached safety patrols and recreation programs while teaching in Wasco. He and his wife Yvonne Jackson reside in Wasco with two children Shelley and Timothy.
Kenneth Pipkin of the Richland School District announced seven more staff members qualified for school bus driver licenses, bringing total drivers to 15. Richland operates eight buses on 32 routes, serving about 55 percent of local students with daily 500 miles of route journeys.
Cecil Johnson was beaten and robbed on Enos Lane after leaving a local bar with Mrs. Roy E. Fitzgerald. Mrs Fitzgerald's husband and Leonard Eugene Glass were among those arrested on August 24 as suspects in an armed robbery case.
The United States Cotton Research Station invites the public to an open house on September 26 as part of National Agricultural Science Week. Agronomist in Charge John H. Turner notes USDA Agricultural Research Service events nationwide to showcase ongoing cotton research, seed and cultural information, and studies on vegetable crops and forage seed production.
Rickie Allen Wiggs aged 16, son of Mrs. Hazel Grady of 354 Terra Vista, who left Tuesday evening August 22 to play football in the park, has been found safe at a friend’s residence in Bakersfield.
Shafter's cooling problem at the library appears to ease as engineers architects contractors and officials work to fix the year long hex. The county fair party for media folks was well received with a standout Up With People performance.
Football tickets are on sale in the high school office for reserved seats. A few seats remain available. Office hours are 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Former general football players Ken Torrigiani Mark Lawson Armando Vazquez and Dan Costello are expected to aid the Bakersfield College Renegades. The Renegades open the home season on September 23 against Fresno City College.
Principal Harold Corrie announces Shafter High School will open Tuesday September 5 with 8 20 a m report for all students in the auditorium. Buses run on 3 30 p m routes and 51 staff supervise orientation as 9 new students join the 1013 enrollment. The district faculty meeting with Theron McCuen is set for August 30 at Harvey Auditorium Bakersfield.
Coach Walter Mince begins his tenure at Shafter with a core from last year’s squad. Jan Stuebbe moves to quarterback as Tim Robnett shifts to wingback. Backfield includes Roy Pierucci Rich Wegis Vincent Rodriguez and Randy Ellis with linemen Steve Chamblee Marvin Barwick J D Ratzliff Jerry Engle Norman Date Charles Brown and John Hardwick. End players last year Jeff Warren Dean Johnston Ron Koop seek roles.
