Kathy Brown daughter of Mr and Mrs Earl Brown and Robert H Kagler son of Dick Kagler and the late Mrs Ollie were married Saturday Aug 12 at 8 pm in First Missionary Baptist Church McFarland Rev Allen Adkins officiated. Ceremony featured bridal party and reception held in Fellowship Hall. The couple plans a short coast honeymoon before settling in Fresno enrolled at Fresno State College.

Staker's 1929 Model A Sets Speed Mark at Bonneville
Joe Stocker of Bakersfield drove a 1929 Model A Roadster to 182.55 mph at the Bonneville National Speed Trials. The car used a 1963 Plymouth Superstock engine built by Lee Fike of Shafter. Pit crew included Janice Stocker Ruth Fike and other local relatives.

Shafter Council approves some dances but delays State Theatre event
The Shafter City Council granted dance permits to the Shafter Dance Club and the American Legion, but denied a dance at the State Theatre on August 31. Dance dates include October 14 December 19 February 10 and May 11 for the club. Legion Teen Dance is September 16. The council also discussed a flashing red signal at Central Avenue and Central Valley Highway and planned a matching funds request to the Fresno office. A police building study group was formed with city officials, a $60,000 building fund exists, and a tax rate was set to raise the same as the old rate. The county will charge $3.90 daily for city prisoners in county facilities. exceptions apply for county and state code violations. The Hofman tract drainage issue will be examined and a retaining wall request for one lot was declined. The nation’s oil reserves and consumption are noted.

Teen Center Closes After Successful Summer Season
The Teen Center at 285 East Lerdo, run by the Junior Women's Club, held final sessions August 29 after a summer of three nights and three afternoons weekly with live bands. Attendance and community response were strong, rules were enforced by three chaperones, and financing depended on completing payments for supplies and refunds from bottle returns. The club borrowed $200 for the opening investment and hopes for a positive financial wrap-up.
