Italian Americans Active In Repelling German Propaganda
Dr Constantine Panunzio, UCLA sociologist, notes Italian Americans are the largest foreign-born group with 1 623 580 in 1940. The Mazzini Society runs about 50 centers with 600 plus members, spreading democracy and aiding Italians through literature, meetings, and consular services. He says loyalty to American democracy is widespread among Italian Americans. Fascist influence grew 1926 to 1934, with 125 centers and 500,000 members, prompting federal investigations and backlash after Mussolini’s son snub in Hollywood and events like the Brenner Pass occupation.
