Judge Mannel Ends Most Colorful Career
Judge Frederick FE. Mannel, 77, Kern county pioneer and first property buyer in the Shafter colony, died Tuesday in Alameda. He drilled the Tide oil well in Midway field near McKittrick in 1901 and discovered North Belridge in 1911 12. He was Shafter’s first justice of the peace and police judge, helped found Sunrise Oil, and served in civic groups. Survived by daughter Elsie Mannel of Alameda. Funeral services held in Alameda.

The Shafter Militia Company drill at the American Legion Hall on Tuesday night featured a wide array of firearms from Civil War muskets to 22 rifles and shotguns. Commander Art Johnson noted rapid drill improvement but said the unit needs more members despite a turnout of about 45. the State Defense Council prohibits dual membership with other protective branches, reducing ranks.

Ford and Kearling Enter Army Air Forces
Two Shafter men, Ford and Kearling, begin training for the Army Air Forces August 28. Ford, vice principal of Shafter High and Kiwanis president, has led civic efforts and helped establish the local army recreation hall at Minter Field. Kearling, Bank of America assistant manager, has been Kiwanis secretary. Both will enter as privates and seek officer training. Mrs. Ford will teach in Bakersfield schools.
