Downtown Shafter to gain brighter streets with new light project
The Shafter city council approved a 6000 project launching 32 pole light extensions on Central avenue and James street. Ed's Equipment won the bid for 32, 400 watt bulbs on 30 foot poles, expected to finish in October and improve safety and downtown visibility for shoppers and police.

Funeral Services Held Thursday for Mrs. M. Myrick
Myrtle Frances Myrick 56 of 161 East Lerdo avenue died Tuesday morning at home from a heart attack. She moved here from Texas 30 years ago and was a local pioneer. Survived by widower Sidney L., two sons Myron and Louis of Bakersfield, brothers Ivan and Marvin Kirkpatrick, sisters Ruby Saunders Fay Benter Edna Drake, and seven grandchildren.

Woodland Annexation Special Election Set in Shafter
A special election will be held at 308 Maple Street on September 17 to decide if the Woodland Park annexation tract should join Shafter. The area lies bounded by Lerdo Highway Tulare Avenue Beech Avenue and Pine Street with most properties included except Dr J Novell. Rotarians Hear Report on 1957 Scout Jamboree

A bill with a 6 115 000 dollar appropriation for the Minter Field reactivation moves through the Senate appropriations committee with strong support. Congressman Harlan Hagen says he is confident the measure will pass and proceed to the Senate for action next week. Any differences will be resolved in a joint conference after Senate passage.

The Shafter Corpsmen defeated the Bakersfield Bearcubs 7-5 last night at Wasco Municipal Diamond to take a 1-0 lead in the Kern County league final best two of three. Don Riley pitched eight innings for Shafter with one aboard for the victory. Clyde Thomas started for Shafter and Bob Sharp and Jerry Gladden worked for the Bearcubs. The Corpsmen, sponsored by Lou Bridges Central Pharmacy, won the Kern County recreation baseball league as regular play ended last week.
