Richland School Board Names Washington Man To Post

The Richland School Board announces William A. Kendrick as Director of Education for the coming school year. Kendrick, from Longview, has 23 years as teacher and administrator, holds a bachelor from the University of Washington and a master's from the University of Oregon. He has led local PTA efforts and youth programs and will join after summer studies and credentialing.

Local Couple Hurt in Bay City Auto Crash

Drive Camp and his wife Alice, both injured, were trapped in their burning car after a three vehicle collision on the Bay Bridge. Oakland man Arthur Jacobsen and another rescuer pulled them free while a crippled woman from a second car was also helped. Mrs Camp teaches in Richland. sister Lorene Hill rushed to aid.

Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast Set for September in Shafter

Shafter Kiwanis club plans its annual pancake breakfast on September 21 under President Robert Bann. Dan Loewen leads the committee feeding about 800 residents at Veterans Memorial Hall as the fund raising event.

Pool Hours Announced for Shafter and Richland Center

Pool hours for the remainder of the summer at Richland Aquatic Center were announced by pool manager Tom Guerrera. Weekdays Monday through Thursday admission is 1 pm to 5 pm, Fridays 1 pm to 9 pm, and weekends 2 pm to 5 pm.

Kern Fair Plans 1957 offering outlined by manager Ed Clendennen

Ed Clendennen secretary manager of the 1957 Kern County fair announces seven day schedule Sept 23 to 29 with a 50 cent gate that covers all entertainment exhibits and fun. He notes new buildings landscaping and rest facilities as part of a five year plan to modernize the fairgrounds and improve school and community exhibits. Entertainment will feature various attractions.

SWID Buys House for Superintendent

The Shafter Wasco Irrigation District board approved purchasing a three bedroom home from the Bureau of Reclamation camp at Delano for 3100 dollars. Secretary-manager Robert Diltz said the house will be moved to the district headquarters and used by Harley Rowland field superintendent to ensure 24 hour service. Rowland currently resides in McFarland.

House Approves 36 115 000 Minter Field Air Defense Plan

The House passes an 81.6 million package for a nationwide radar system and Minter Field reactivation for 1957 58. Funds cover SAGE electronic gear and radar comms with possible 2 million more for housing and support infra. No immediate move of air force personnel until next year. Senate action expected to finalize the appropriation.

Shafter Homecoming Adds Community Barbecue

A community barbecue will be part of the Shafter Homecoming events on October 25 26 and 27. General chairman Robert Doss said the barbecue is a project of the American Legion with Jack Janzen as chairman. The three day observance marks Shafter's 45th birthday and features are being lined up as former residents are invited to attend.

Disease Fight Fund Grants Fellows To Notable Hospitals

The 20 30 International head quarters via the 20 30 Club of Shafter directs a $50 deviation fund to aid rheumatic fever research. Fellowships totaling $16 200 are awarded to Harvard Medical School Mount Sinai Hospital Salt Lake General Hospital UCSF and Children’s Hospital Society of Los Angeles. Since 1948 the program has awarded over $90,000 through contributions from member clubs.

Alert Farmer Helps Capture Two Burglars

A Shafter farmer aided deputies in catching two 16 year old burglars who had robbed three homes in one night. Harley Barling recognized the youths at his home on Smiths corner and notified authorities, leading to the pair being captured after fleeing into a cotton patch. The boys confessed to breaking into the Riverside avenue homes of D. C. Schneider and Sam Dirksen.

Chamber of Commerce Sponsors Community Booth at Kern County Fair

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce冬oard decided to sponsor a community booth at Kern County Fair September 23 to 29. Don Zachary named William Clanin Scott McMichael Travis Garton Ed Nikkel and Bob Somers to assist. The exhibit theme is Community Life with four turntable panels showcasing local life, school activities church work crops recreation and culture. Farmers are asked to save exemplars of local produce to display and contact Zachary or Bob Somers to help.

Irrigation District Board to Set Tax Rate After Hearings

The Shafter Wasco Irrigation District board will sit as a board of equalization on September 3 starting at 4 p.m. to hear tax assessment complaints. After hearings, SWID will prepare the 1957 58 budget and set the district tax rate, says secretary manager Robert Diltz.

Potato Seed Men Prepare August Field Tours

The Kern county Potato Seed Growers association will run two field trips in August. The Tule lake district tour is August 21 to 24 with bus transportation, and a Utah seed field tour follows August 26 to 29. Funeral services for Lee Ella Shepard 65 of 18481 Smith Private Jane were held August 6 at Armstrong Mortuary with Rev. Sam Wilcoxon officiating. Interment followed in Shafter Cemetery. Shafter Corpsmen Win Kern Baseball Flag Playoffs On

Concluding regular season play the Kern County Baseball League sponsored by the County Parks and Recreation Department will start Shaughnessy playoffs Thursday night at Wasco. The Merchants meet the plan team in the first of a three game series. Second place Bear Cubs will play Giants starting Sunday at Sam Lynn Park. Winners meet in a three game playoff for the Shaughnessy beginning August 14 at Sam Lynn. Kern County's All Stars selected by managers will conduct.

New Police Desk Officer Named for Shafter Unit

Chief John Reily announced the appointment of Robert Nixon aged 25 as desk officer for the Shafter Police Department. Nixon will work the 2 to 10 am shift to help provide 24 hour service. he is a Shafter High School graduate, former Marine, and previously employed by Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

SWID Sells Water As Level Falls In Shafter Wasco District

The Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District reports 1800 acre feet of water sold with 1000 acre feet more likely next week to ease a surplus caused by delays in a $10.25 million distribution system. District official Robert Diltz notes the water table is dropping and pumps are breaking suction amid a drought season.

Record Theft of Bicycles Warns by Police

Police Chief John Reily reported a yearly record of more than 75 bicycles stolen or taken since January 1. He urged locking bikes, registering serial numbers, and not leaving cycles on front lawns to aid recovery and reduce nuisance.

Final Rites Held for Infant Etta Ruth Copeland

Funeral services were held at Armstrong mortuary for Etta Ruth Copeland four day old daughter of Mr and Mrs Lex Copeland of Tupman who died August 3 in a Bakersfield hospital Rev Melvin Krug of Shafter officiated and interment followed. Besides her parents she is survived by siblings Billy June Clarkston Lex Dorothy Mae Jerry Von James Lee Marine Thile Joe Eddie and Darlene all of Tupman.
