Retired Rancher Becomes Shafter Painter of Rural Scenes
Stephen J. Mulder of Shafter, after years in San Diego farming, took up oil landscapes. His work, shown at the Shafter Library, Santa Barbara Savings, and Community National Bank, fills his home with barn and mountain scenes. He paints from imagination, learns from a San Diego teacher, and offers paintings for sale or custom commissions with payment deferred until satisfaction. His son Stanley, an art teacher, encouraged him, and Mulder, 85, plans to continue painting after creating a 12 by 4 foot baptism mural for Mission Baptist Church of Shafter.
